Oysters-on-a-Roll with Jim Kaeser.
Learn how to grow your own oyster mushrooms while sipping cider!
The Workshop
During the workshop you will inoculate a new, sterilized roll of toilet paper with Pleurotus ostreatus, the Italian strain. The short hands-on preparation and a brief talk about mushroom culture and uses will conclude with your taking home an inoculated roll that will bear mushrooms for you in four to six weeks.
The Instructor/Grower
Jim Kaeser has been growing mushrooms since 2007 and selling fresh and dried mushrooms and mushroom logs at local markets and to restaurants. Jim has been active in educating the public about mushroom culture through public seminars, workshops, and special classes within area schools. Oysters-on-a-Roll has been used recently as a part of a mushroom culture class at the Chesterfield Tech Center – Courthouse.
About Oysters-on-a-Roll
Fungi help break down and recycle the wood of trees and other plant materials by digesting the lignin/cellulose in the fibers. By selecting a suitable mushroom fungi and growing substrate, you can grow mushrooms indoors all year round with a minimum of effort. Several oyster mushroom fungi are suited for this task.
Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus sp.) are prized by chefs and known for their nutritional value.
Using an Oyster mushroom grain spawn to inoculate rolls of toilet paper, you can have a first crop of delicious oyster mushrooms in about 4 to 6 weeks.
Inoculation time total: 40-60 minutes. Active time: 10 minutes
Incubation time at room temp: 4 to 6 weeks. Active time: nearly zero.
Refrigeration: 2 days. Active time: 5 minutes
Fruiting: 5-7 days. Active time for harvest and resting rolls: 10 minutes.
All steps can be done within your home at room temperature. No basement storage, no special humidity requirements or temperature regulation. NO ODOR!
This is a free workshop. RSVP below to reserve your space.
