Natural Wine: Portugal | In the City

Every Weekend, March 21 – April 12 (12pm-10pm Saturdays, 12pm-6pm Sundays)

What is natural wine? While there is no perfect definition, natural wine really describes the method of fermenting fruit juice. In a nutshell, it means fermenting juice with nothing added, and nothing taken away. Other terms like minimal or zero intervention are often used to describe natural wine. If you don’t like chemicals or other unnatural stuff in your food, you should consider exploring natural wine.

We’re excited to be bringing regional natural wines to our Scott’s Addition tasting room. Wines will be available by the glass or bottle on Saturdays and Sundays only.

Why focus on natural wines? Well, because we are the only cidery in Virginia—and one of a handful nationwide—that follows natural methods! We want to open our palettes with you, explore natural wines from other regions, and hope you enjoy our ciders to their fullest!

Aphros Vinho Verde, Portugal – Aphros produces wines that are an expression of their region, reflecting the unique soil conditions and varietals that are exclusive to the Vinho Verde region of Portugal. Vasco Croft leads this project as winemaker, with Rui Cunha as a consultant winemaker. The Aphros team harvests from 3 different Quintas, the oldest of which dates back to the 16th century. The sites are farmed using biodynamic techniques, producing harmony between soil, plants, animals, and human activity. No artificial chemicals are added to the soil and only natural compost and manure is used for fertilization. The wines that result from this care of the land are part of the “Slow Wine Movement” that is happening across Portugal.
